What is happening on Broadway?

Investing in the Future

At an early stage, Stage Entertainment invested as co-producer in two new musicals: Hadestown and Pretty Woman. It is a result of our strategic wish to bring the latest hits from Broadway to our theatres in Europe.

The first was the winner of eight awards at the Tony Awards Gala in New York. The musical features an original jazz and folk music score by award winning Anaïs Mitchell.

Hadestown is a surprising new version of the classic Greek story of Orpheus descending into the underworld governed by the god Hades.

Charming the god with his music, Hades hopes to retrieve his great love Eurydice and bring her back to the world of the living. The hit song 'Why We Build the Wall' describes the stupidity of building walls. Although written long before Trump’s presidency, audiences experience the song as a reference to current politics.

The second title, Pretty Woman, is inspired by the record braking 1990 movie starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. The German production will have its opening night on 29 September at the Stage Theater an der Elbe.

"Fox in the mouse house"

Broadway News recently announced the takeover by Disney Theatrical Productions of Fox Stage Productions. It was the predictable next step since the Walt Disney Company completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, earlier this year. “The theatrical arm of Fox, which developed stage adaptations of films in the Fox catalog,” says Broadway News, “was created in 2013, with upcoming titles including the musicals Mrs. Doubtfire and The Devil Wears Prada.”
